Tlaloc is an Exotic Scout Rifle that can only be used by the Warlock. You can unlock it by reaching rank 3 with the Gunsmith and completing its Exotic quest.

We also have a full review.

Tlaloc has a base Impact of 48 and RoF of 37, putting it into the same class as the Boolean Gemini, Hung Jury SR4, or Vision of Confluence. It’s unique perk is ‘Overflow’ which increases the weapons handling, rate of fire, and stability when the wielder’s super is fully charged.

When Overflow is active, there’s a roughly a 20% boost in RoF. In a side-by-side comparison, Tlaloc with Overflow managed to fire 10 rounds, whereas the standard Tlaloc was only able to fire off 8. Similarly, another side-by-side rate of fire comparison showed that a Tlaloc with Overflow manages to shoot faster than even the MIDA Multi-Tool. For stability, the Overflow improvement is noticeable, along with the increase in handling which improves ADS speed as well as its ability to ‘ready’ faster.

So let’s review the upsides of using the Tlaloc in the Crucible: High Impact, faster RoF than MIDA, slightly better stability than VoC, and incredibly fast handling. The obvious downside: all these benefits will only kick in when you’re holding onto your Super.

On the subject of grenades, it’s worth mentioning that the Tlaloc also comes equipped with the ‘Grenadier’ perk, which reduces the overall cooldown of your grenades by 10%. If you’re playing at Tier 5 discipline with your Warlock (recommended), your grenade cooldown rate of :25 seconds will be further reduced by 2.5 seconds every time you get a kill using the Tlaloc. There’s no limit to how many times the ‘Grenadier’ perk can be triggered in a single life.

The biggest thing to remember about using Tlaloc in the Crucible is that you don’t have to limit yourself to using the gun the entire game. If you’re using the Tlaloc and find yourself in a situation where you’d really like to use your super, go ahead and do it. You can always simply switch off of Tlaloc, and go back to any other gun you feel comfortable with. Then, when your super recharges, just switch back to Tlaloc.

It’s also important to note that Tlaloc has the perk ‘Eye of the Storm’, which makes your weapon more accurate as your health gets lower. Now while it isn’t advised to challenge people in PvP while your health is low, it’s good to know that if you get into a 1 on 1 fight with an enemy, your chances of shooting accurately will go up as you take heavy damage.

When trying to determine which barrel/weapon perks on the Tlaloc to use, tests were done with various barrels and perks against a standard max armor opponent (Sunbreaker Titan). While there were 2 scenarios where having Max Stability and Minimum Impact required one additional body shot to kill, all other scenarios proved that having Max Stability/Min Impact would yield the same results as if you were using Max Impact.

Therefore, it’s advised to go with Max Stability, and run Tlaloc with Soft Ballistics and Injection mold. The loss in impact will hardly make a difference if you’re a relatively accurate shot, and the boosted stability comes in handy when dealing with the guns high-ish rate of fire.

Exotic Armor

There’s a few solid choices that will compliment Tlaloc’s strengths:

  • Voidfang Vestments: Being able to respawn with full grenade energy is great, for any Warlock class in the Crucible.
  • Claws of Ahamkara: These gauntlets provide 2 melee charges for any subclass.
  • Alchemist’s Raiment: Orbs collected when your Super is full recharge your grenades and melee.
  • Nothing Manacles: Having an extra scatter grenade charge definitely helps boost the Voidwalker neutral game.
  • Ophidian Aspect: Best for Voidwalker, but still usable by other classes. Tlaloc already has superb handling, but having all weapons ready faster and have better reload speed can’t hurt.
